Considering the huge slate of industry events that sprang up last year, very few of them were really outstanding for those actually in the industry. However, one conference stood out from the herd due to its adherence to treating its attendees with the utmost care and providing a intimate yet educational venue. Originally dubbed the Online Game Developers Conference, the ION Game Conference stood as a solid platform for industry professionals in the online game space to learn about and discuss current trends and the implications of future events. To preview this years upcoming show, Ten Ton Hammer's Cody "Micajah" Bye chatted with conference director Peter Freese about this year's conference, the name change, and what he sees in the future of the online game industry. Ten Ton Hammer - OGDC 2007 Coverage Portal When it comes to online gaming events Ten Ton Hammer is there with exclusive interviews and expanded coverage. On May 10th and 11th our team converged on the ION Game Conference in Seattle, Washington. The inaugural OGDC is dedicated to the development of games for the wired world, from casual online games (of the type offered by Pogo) to clan gaming to Massively Multiplayer Online Games. Gamasutra - May 10, 2007 - OGDC: Disney On Building Mass Market MMOs“Don’t make them walk,” was the advice given to an audience of developers at the Online Game Development Conference, where Mike Goslin, vice president at Disney Online’s Virtual Reality Studio was delivering a talk on building massively multiplayer online games for the mass market. » Gamasutra - May 11, 2007 - OGDC: Sony Details PlayStation Network Expansion PlansDuring a panel discussion on the topic of new opportunities in console technology at the Online Game Developers Conference in Seattle, SCEA’s director of third-party developer relations took the opportunity to explain to an audience of developers — as well as detail the PlayStation Network with many fresh specifics. » Gamasutra - May 11, 2007 OGDC: Devs Debate The Business of Online Gamers Arguably the highlight of the Online Game Development Conference in Seattle was Friday's panel focusing on new payment models for online games. The blue-ribbon panel covered topics ranging from Microsoft’s points and iTunes to secondary markets and farming, as well as the history of payments in the Asian market. » Gamedev.net - OGDC 2007 Event CoverageIn the end it was a very enjoyable event. I've never been to a small, focused conference before and it was very relaxing compared to GDC, which has like a bazillion things happening at once. In addition to the conference, the city of Seattle itself was very pleasant. My hotel in the downtown area was just a few blocks from the conference venue, and I was able to walk anywhere in the city, from the Space Needle to the famous Pike Place Market. If you attend this conference next year, which I most likely will, I'd definitely suggest sticking around the following weekend to do some sight-seeing. » Warcry's Razorwire - OGDC 2007: Interview With Scott Brown of NetdevilEarlier today, I sat down with Scott Brown to talk a bit about Warmonger. Warmonger is a multiplayer FPS using the Unreal 3 Engine and incorporating the Ageia PhysX engine. Here's what he had to say: Scott: Warmonger is in the final polish stages now, and what we're really trying to do now is find out what is the best type of business model. What do we want to do, do we want to sell expansion packs? We're going to give this first episode away and we're trying to figure out where to go from there. Do we go with a publisher and have them pick it up and release a full-featured game? Do we do it ourselves and release a gun pack or map kit? » The Osbornion One - OGDC 2007This is the first year for the Online Game Developers Conference. It was organized almost entirely by Peter Freese, a lead programmer at Hidden Path Entertainment. Because I have a longtime professional interest in online/multiplayer gaming, and because it was local and only $340 I went to the conference in hopes of discovering some useful insights and developing some industry contacts. I'm happy to report that the conference was a success for me on both counts. » Virtual Cultures - OGDC: The Importance of Community (a new hope)The inaugural Online Game Development Conference in Seattle last week was a great success: well attended, but small enough to enable a sense of common identity and purpose, a feeling that we were all in it together. The industry participants were from a number of studios and technology companies, and the panels and presentations were very strong and informative and, amazingly enough, several voices called out for recognition of the role of community and community managers. » Sign up for our press notifications! Please fill in the information in the form below to receive Evergreen Events press releases. |
